Tweeting, yapping, frothing… and teaching (English onomatopoeia)

kapowFor the last ten years or so, delicate birds in English-speaking countries the world over have been complaining about social networking – or to be more precise, about one site in particular. It’s not Facebook that has upset them, or LinkedIn, nor is it Instagram or Tumblr. It’s Twitter that has ruffled their feathers. The reason is simple; they can no longer do one of the things that delicate birds in English-speaking countries most like to do, at least not without everyone expecting them to keep it short and simple and add a couple of hashtags to the message. They can no longer twitter or tweet.

‘Why they had to go with our particular sound is beyond me,’ tweeted Warner Bros. veteran Tweety Bird, in an exclusive interview for Pearson ELT Learning Journeys. ‘Why couldn’t they have called it Oinker or Mooster? The pigs and the cows wouldn’t have minded. They could’ve done with the publicity.’ Meanwhile, groups of birds from other countries have expressed their relief that the site chose to go with English onomatopoeia rather than sound-words from their own languages. ‘Chu-u chu-u!’ chirped a Japanese spokes-bird, visibly relieved, while a Spanish owl in Madrid hooted in to say, ‘It’s bad enough that the pedestrian lights here go pío pío. Aviation English

478335883On 27th March 1977, in very foggy conditions at Los Rodeos airport in Tenerife, and after numerous unexpected incidents and delays, KLM Flight 4805, laden with fuel – and before it was safe to do so – began to hurtle down the runway. Miscommunication in English between the crew and the tower had resulted in the captain starting the take-off before the clearance to do so had actually been given. Ahead of Flight 4805 on the very same runway, taxiing directly towards them, was another Boeing 747, Pan Am Flight 1736, lost in the thickening fog and unsure whether the Spanish air traffic controllers had told them to take the ‘first’ or the ‘third’ exit. The poor visibility meant that the impending disaster was completely hidden from view at the tower, and that accurate and unambiguous oral communication was therefore paramount; the ear had to do what the eye could not. Seconds later the two aircraft finally saw one another. The KLM tried to lift off, the Pan Am to turn, but by then it was too late. The resulting collision and ensuing fireball killed all 248 people aboard the KLM plane as well as 335 of the 396 aboard the Pan American, making it the deadliest ever disaster in aviation history. The few Pan Am survivors, lucky alone by the fluke of their seating, crawled out to safety through holes in the disintegrating fuselage and along the one remaining wing. Continue reading

Thank Frige it’s Friday!

5a--days of the weekRecognise any of these songs? I Don’t Like Mōnandægs, Ruby Tīwesdæg, Wōdnesdæg Morning 3A.M., Þhūnresdæg’s Child, Frigedæg I’m in Love. Well, you may or may not know the songs themselves, but you’ll certainly be able to make out the days of the week in their titles, even though they’re written in Old English. But how did the names come about?

Long, long ago, when the Romans were in charge of pretty much everything, they introduced their seven-day week throughout the territories they controlled, including the land that would eventually become England. Along with this system came the names of the days in Latin, which honoured the sun, the moon and various Roman gods. Sometime between the 3rd and 8th centuries, however, as the power of Rome receded and Latin ceased to be the lingua franca, the names were translated into the various Germanic languages, including Old English. The process ensured that even though many of the names changed completely, the connection with the originals was not entirely lost.

In English, ‘Sunday’ – the day of the sun – and ‘Monday’ – the day of the moon – were direct translations of the Latin dies solis and dies lunae. ‘Tuesday’, ‘Wednesday’, ‘Thursday’ and ‘Friday’ came about by substituting the names of Germanic deities for the original Roman ones. Only ‘Saturday’ retains the name of the Roman god – the day of Saturn, dies saturni. Tuesday is named for Tiw, a one-handed god famed for his strength and prowess in combat, and was chosen to match the Roman dies martis, the day of the war-god Mars. Wōdnesdæg commemorates Wodan. Like the god Mercury, who gave his name, via Latin, to miercoles, mercredi and mercoledi, Wodan is a so-called ‘psychopomp’, which might sound like some knife-wielding murderer who likes to stand on ceremony, but actually means a god who carries the souls of the dead to the afterlife. Þhūnresdæg is for Thor, the god of thunder, and corresponds to Jupiter – otherwise known as Jove, as in dies iovis – the king of the Roman gods as well as god of the sky himself; both Thor and Jove are commonly depicted holding thunderbolts. Friday started out as Frigedæg, the day of Frige, goddess of love and fertility. The planet Venus was known as ‘Frige’s Star’, so ‘Friday’ corresponds to the Latin dies veneris, the day of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, which of course ended up as in most of the Romance language as viernes, vendredi, venerdi and so on (Portuguese being the major exception), and which in English lives on in the not-so-lovely phrase ‘venereal disease’. So next time you say the phrase ‘TGIF’, you’ll know exactly which god you’re thanking!

The English names of the months, on the other hand, come directly from their Latin originals. In the earliest days of Rome, the months originally followed the phases of the moon exactly. As soon as the first faint crescent of light appeared out of the black disc of the new moon, the ancient priests would call out to the public – calare, in Latin – that the month had begun, and it was from this ritual that the first day of the month came to be known as the kalenda – ‘the calling’ – which naturally enough gave English the word ‘calendar’. Unsurprisingly, over the centuries everything went very out of kilter, especially as the lunar calendar didn’t match the natural year (not to mention the fact that the calendar itself was not a public document and was therefore open to sly alteration for political ends), and it took two major reforms – one by Caesar and the next by his successor Octavian – to sort the whole mess out. In their honour, the names of what were then the fifth and sixth months, Quintilis and Sextilis, were changed respectively to Julius and Augustus. This is just as well; had the reforms not taken place, we might these days be asking our friends their plans for summer with the rather awkward question, ‘Going anywhere nice this Sexty?’

And why, you might wonder, do we say ‘leap year’ for a year that has an extra day? Is it because you should ‘take a leap’ with the extra day and do something special? Propose to your boyfriend if you’re a woman, for example, tradition holding that February 29th is the only day a woman can acceptably do so? Well, not exactly. The answer is purely to do with the calendar. From one ordinary year to the next a fixed date advances one day at a time, but the addition of the extra day makes the date advance by two days. So March 1st, for example, which fell on a Friday in 2013 and last year fell on a Saturday, this year falls on a Sunday. Next year, however, which is a leap year, it will ‘leap over’ the Monday and fall on a Tuesday instead.

So there you have it. Now you know why ‘leap years’ really do jump, why the ‘moon-ths’ are so-called, how Sunnandæg Girl got her name, and why Sæturnsdæg Night’s Alright for Fighting.

“To learn, our brain needs an interesting initial stimulus that sparks our curiosity and excitement and opens up the windows of attention, which is necessary to build knowledge.” This is a statement by doctor Francisco Mora in his interesting book called Neuroeducation.
There’s no learning without emotion. This is not a new idea, all teachers know that, but now it’s scientifically proven by neuroscientists, so there is clear proof that we can include it in our lesson plans with the confidence that it really works.
Along with other teaching techniques and resources, technology comes embedded with this initial stimulus.  Because, by its very nature, it is interactive and provides the learner with immediate feedack which gives her increased autonomy.
Once, I asked one of my students how interactive games would help him to learn and he told me, “You know, they usually ask you to do something, and sometimes I don’t understand the message at the beginning, but when I do it, then I understand what they where telling me.”  This is a great way to explain the idea of “learning by doing.”
While they are trying, failing and achieving they are building their own knowledge.  So what could be a better analogy for this kind of learning than construction? In the game, the protagonist constructs his own building…as he constructs his own knowledge through fun and adaptive games and by using appropriate topics for our younger learners.

Baseball, culture and language

For Americans baseball is much more than just a sport.  There is a whole culture tied to baseball that tells us where we come from, what our values are and how we view the world.  It even influences how we speak the English language!

So I was very pleased to kick off our cultural talks for 2014 with a new presentation titled Play Ball! Understanding America through its national pastime in the beautiful Autonomous Community of Extremadura.  I visited the Oficial Language Schools in Zafra and Plasencia and had the opportunity to share my views on a sport which is still somewhat of a mystery here in Spain with almost 300 students at 3 separate talks.

I just have to say how welcome I was made to feel in both schools, and I would like to give an extra special thanks to Antonio, Raúl and Veronica (pictured below) who lent me a hand looking up some useful expressions that have their origins in the American pastime.

Baseball Vocab

Among some of the expressions they were able to “catch” from the talk were “to touch base”, “to take a rain check” and “to be in the same ballpark.”  Do you know what they mean?

UPDATE:  Today (7/11/14) I gave another talk near my “home base” in Madrid when I visited the EOI in Torrejón de Ardoz.  The woman below reminded me of something that I knew but forgot to mention in my talk.  Her name was Ana and she told me of her memories as a girl watching the American servicemen at the military base there play the men from the Cuban embassy.  Torrejón has its own special history of baseball as well!

Ana, who is one of the most intrepid beginner learners of English I have ever met, also thought I neglected to mention the film A League of Their Own and the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.  A point well taken Ana.  I promise to do that in my next talk!
